Whenever I see a statue or anykind of image in a tourist spot, I notice that everyone only looks and takes photos from the front side. It's such a shame, the backside is just as well complete and has an unique atmoshphere of its own. So I decided to start this blog showing you the backside of things I see in places I go to. Thanks for visiting!
I like the way you pose in the back of the Namahage statues LOL
I just remembered the Japanese TV show titled "Yurusenai Hanashi" where comedian people share ideas/themes they can't understand. One of my favorite stories was about Namahage. He said "Namagage is too scary." I laughed so hard. It's like a kid! He goes when a monster look creature with such a scary face and holding a knife suddenly comes in a house and says "Where is a bad kid?" everyone would cry, even a grown-up. This sounds totally silly, but I thought he makes sense??!
I used to regard Namahage as a kind of sacred feature, close to Enma-sama... and the existence of Namahage keeps the kids in Akita from misbehaving to some extent. If they do sth naughty, their moms would simply say, "Namahage's gonna come!", not unlike "Santa's not coming!".
But nowadays, Namahage's the one who seems to be misbehaving lol. I heard there are so few local people who are willing to play the part, and volunteers who come from Tokyo often go around the houses as Namahage. Not so many people think of the figure as sacred, maybe?
